a = u as in but

i = i as in bit

u = oo as in boo

e = e and is bet

o = o as in bot

ou = oor as in door

asa
- morning

asa gohan - breakfast

dare - who

konbini - convenience store, eg Seicomart, Lawsons, 7-11

gaijin - foreigner

gohan - food/rice

hai - yes

hontou - really? are you serious?

iku - go

ikou - let's go

ikura - how much (does it cost)?

irashaimase - welcome

itsu - when

keitai - mobile phone

konbanwa - good evening

konichiwa - hello

majide - really? are you serious?

miruku - milk

nan / nani - what

ohayou (gozaimasu) - good morning (add gozaimasu to be more polite to people you don't know so well)

onsen - natural hot spring baths

pan - bread

ramen - Chinese style Japanese noodles. Hokkaido specialty, must have!

taberu - eat

teishoku - value set meal (a main meal served with several sides such as a bowl of rice, a bowl of miso soup, salad and pickles)

totemo - very

sayonara - goodbye

sashimi - a slice of raw fish on its own, not on a rectangular cube of rice

suberu - ski, snowboard (literally 'slide')

sugoi - amazing, unreal

suupaa - supermarket

sushi - a slice of raw fish served on a rectangular cube of rice

yama - mountain

yoru - night

yuki - snow
